DEWALT DC970K-2 18v Drill Review – Is This Cordless Drill the Best for You?

18 drill

A friend lent me his DEWALT DC970K-2 18v drill with cordless design for a DIY project and I ended up using it for three weeks. This allowed me to get a clear idea of how good the model’s features and capabilities were. Additionally, I was well-familiar with the brand since I own a DEWALT D25263K D-Handle SDS rotary hammer. Given all this, I am ready to review the brand’s cordless drill with confidence.

Design and Weight

The handle of the 18v drill stems from the center of its body and this creates excellent balance. This results in lower fatigue level which is quite important, especially when you have lots of work on your hands. The handle is quite ergonomic. You will always have a firm grip without the handle ever getting slippery even if you have sweaty palms like me.

The drill is fairly compact with a length of just 9 inches and weighs 4.7 pounds. This is pretty much standard for the modern cordless drills. I’ve personally used heavier models and I find this one to be a lot easier to handle.

The Chuck Assessed

The DEWALT DC970K-2 18v drill comes with a 1/2-inch keyless chuck. This is the largest size which you will find in the models for home use. This makes the drill one of the most versatile available. You can use it with virtually any type of bit that you can think of to do drilling and fastening jobs.

The keyless design means that you can tighten and loosen the chuck with your hand without the need for using extra tools. This can save you a massive amount of time and effort, especially if you switch between drill and driver bits frequently. The chuck is made of plastic, but I find it to be quite sturdy and personally think that it can withstand the test of time.

Motor Operation and Speed

With 18 volts of power, this cordless drill for home use is one of the most powerful of its type. You can use it for virtually any drilling or fastening job within your home, no matter whether the material which you work with is wood, plastic, metal or something else. The motor of this 18v drill performs reliably. It produces 38 UWO (unit watts out – a measure for presenting the output based on both torque and speed).

You can choose between two speeds when using the DEWALT DC970K-2: 0-450 RPM and 0-1,500 RPM. With the lower one, you will also get more torque to drill through thicker materials. The higher one, which is greater than what many competitors have to offer, enables you to drill through thin materials super quickly.

How about Battery Performance?

You will find two 18-volt NiCAD batteries with 1.2-amp hours each in the package plus a charger. The batteries last for a sufficiently long time to enable you to complete small to medium-sized jobs without stopping. Since there are two of them, it makes sense to keep one fully charged on standby to continue to work immediately. The charger works well and can give you a fully charged battery in around one hour. This is very good performance, in my opinion.

The Included Accessories

You will also get a contractor bag when you buy this 18v drill. It’s big, strong and resistant to all kinds of damage. I find it to be quite durable. A hard case would be nicer, but it’s still a useful accessory to have.

Any Cons?

This cordless drill may get a bit noisy while working. Still, this is not something which will make your work less effective or annoy you way too much.

The Verdict

The DEWALT DC970K-2 18v drill works well while being easy to use. It’s sturdy and durable. Visit Amazon for more details and reviews.
